TaLI @ Five Celebrations and Fundraising Dinner

TaLI @ Five Celebrations and Fundraising Dinner

Under the leadership of the founder and Executive Director, Nyaradzo Mashayamombe, the TaLI team held the first ever fundraising dinner dubbed “Girls R Us” which took place on the 30th of October 2015. Inspired by the desire to provide sustainable solutions towards the provision of Support and Security to survivors of abuse especially Girls, with the support of their Board, the team harnessed her entrepreneurial and creative skills to craft this Annual Dinner Festival. The aim of the dinner was to mobilize resources for the benefit of vulnerable/ disenfranchised girls.

The Fundraising Dinner was a glamorous red carpet event with the presence of significant stakeholders from all walks of life and it ran under the theme ‘GIRlS ARE US’. The organisation deliberately organised something during the month of October, in honor of the International Day of the Girl Child, which falls every year on the 11th of October to acknowledge the vulnerabilities and challenges met by girls and young women in their everyday lives. Commissioned by the United Nations Secretary Ban Ki-Moon, the world commemorates this day setting agendas to make better the lives of girls and young women across the world.

The main goal of the Dinner was To Provide Support to Girl Survivors and victims of Gender Based Violence (GBV) through strengthening TaLI’s response System in providing the services. The Objectives included celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child and raising money to support girls and victims of abuse. Under the hosting of the prestigious MC For the generous partnership that Meikles offered TaLI, Hugo Ribatika and successful radio personality Iyati aka Fiona Takaendesa of Starfm, the audience where kept entertained by Alexio Kawara and Cynthia Mare. International organisations and partners such as Action Aid had representation coupled with prominent speakers such as Dr Eve Gadzikwa, Rev Nyanhete from Zimbabwe National Council for the Welfare of Children, Gogo VaStacey made the night one to remember.

The main feature of the night, was the honouring of the grandmother of a rape victim, Tsitsi Stacey Munjoma, a 10 year old who was raped and was subsequently killed by her perpetrator in 2013. TaLI has been supporting the family throughout the court processes and has been going to the courts together with Tsitsi’s grandmother.

The evening was a platform for various milestones which took place. As one of the thematic areas that TaLI focuses on, Intervention is key in facilitating the reintegration of survivors of abuse into the community. As part of Intervention, TaLI launched the Education Fund which aims to raise funds to send financially challenged girls back to school. Even Brigham Young highlighted that when you educate a woman, you educate a generation. The Education fund is being piloted in the Shurugwi District and was started off with 20 girls but the intention is to support a larger number of vulnerable Girls. On the night, 10 individuals which include Imelda Mahaka, Doctor Mutendi, Mr Chataurwa, students like Maud Chifamba, among others, pledged to support the girls throughout the basic education, a gesture that is rarely seen today in a world where there is more self ambition and greed.

As part of its milestones, TaLI launched the Evaluation Report and also the 5 year Strategic Plan for 2016-2020. There was also the launch of 5 Awards set to honour individuals that were engaged in providing security for children and ensuring the realization of their rights and this was done through TaLI posting a call on Kubatana, for nominees in relation to these awards and through an independent selection Committee.
